The Origin and Meaning of Wedding Rings
The unbroken circle is an ancient symbol of eternity. In a marriage, the hope of every young couple and their families and friends is everlasting love, and that is one reason for the use of a wedding ring or band to symbolize and commemorate this desire.
The wedding ring or wedding band is a metal ring, usually made from gold, platinum, or silver. It is generally worn on the left ring finger, although in some countries it is worn on the right ring finger. The wedding rings are given from the bride and groom to each other at the wedding ceremony. The wedding band is usually placed above the engagement ring on the ring finger, however in some countries, the bride does not wear an engagement ring, and the wedding band exists as the sole symbol of the marriage commitment. In this case, the wedding rings are often engraved with the wedding date, and possibly the name of the bride and groom.
In some traditions, the best man is in charge of keeping the rings safe until they are exchanged during the wedding ceremony, at the moment of giving and receiving of the rings. The wedding bands can also be paraded into the ceremony by a ring bearer (a young boy who is a member of either the bride or groom's family, usually on a special pillow or cushion.
In some countries, a woman is encouraged to wear her wedding band underneath her engagement ring to keep it "close to her heart". The wedding band can also be worn above the engagement ring, thus sealing the engagement into the marriage. It is also acceptable and preferred in some cultures for the wedding ring to be worn alone.
Wedding bands can be chosen and purchased together or separately from the bride's engagement ring. Many couples choose to design both the bride's engagement ring and wedding band at the same time to simplify the process. An engaged couple can also choose or custom design matching wedding bands, a further symbol of their unity and commitment to each other. Some brides also prefer to have a wedding band that can be joined to the engagement ring after the wedding ceremony to create one ring.
Styles of wedding rings for men and women range from simple circles fashioned from one metal to elaborate creations with diamonds, platinum and precious stones. Some brides choose eternity bands as yet another symbol of the hope of unending love between the bride and groom, however this type of band can also be given as a gift for an anniversary or other special occasion such as the birth of a child. Wedding rings for women can have diamonds of any shape and size, or even precious stones in the birthstone of the bride or other symbolic color. Wedding rings for men can range from simple designs, to wedding rings with diamonds or gold designs, or even newer materials such as the very popular scratch-resistant tungsten.
Whichever wedding rings a bride and groom choose, it's what the rings symbolize that is perhaps most important--a commitment to love and treasure each other for the rest of their lives.
